Editor Ray Hecht set out simply to draw about riding a scooter around Taipei. What grew from that is this: a chorus of outsiders' perspectives - American, Canadian, Northern Irish, Honduran, Colombian, South African, Italian, Malaysian, Indonesian - each rendering their own corner of Taiwanese life in a wildly different visual style, from woodcut printmaking to digital illustration to loose autobiographical sketch comics. Inside these pages: a first scooter license gone wrong, a solo move across the world, Ghost Month superstitions, tomb-sweeping traditions, night markets and farm stays, dragon boats and betel nut stands, love found and family built far from home. Some stories are funny. Some are quietly devastating. All of them are real. Taiwan's future is uncertain, and so, these days, is the rest of the world's.
